Learning to be Still Before the Lord

Prayer is a conversation not just a monologue. We need to listen as God’s voice is often “still” and “small” and we can drown it out. We can express our respect and adoration allowing Him to speak to our hearts by waiting in quietness before Him. He may speak to us through a sense of His nearness, His love, His welcome, His power or His guidance. He may bring to mind scriptures that speak to our heart. The strength we obtain from the Lord and the quietness of heart He gives prepares us to pray effectively. We can come before God with expectancy rather than wearily dragging ourselves into His presence. Although when it is necessary dragging ourselves into His presence is a good thing. It is less necessary as we let God drain away our inner stress and infuse us with His strength day by day.

When we meditate on the truths God has revealed about Himself we can concentrate on them attentively. Then we are to pause and be still – relax, let go, cease striving – and know in the depths of our inner most being that this awesome, exalted, dependable person is God. We can let our thoughts about His greatness lead us to an inner stillness that absorbs His reality and responds to Him with a relaxed confidence.

Psalm 46:10 (New International Version)
10 "Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth."

Waiting on God and resting in Him have much in common. Both result in absorbing His strength; both involve truly turning in to God and His word. The more we have His word dwelling in our hearts, the more it can help us be quiet, restful, and attentive to Him during our walking hours.

Song Lyrics – Be Still For The Presence Of The Lord – By: David Evans

Be still for the presence of the Lord
The holy one is here
Come bow before him now
With reverence and fear
In him no sin is found
We stand on holy ground
Be still for the presence of the Lord
The holy one is here
Be still for the glory of the Lord
Is shining all around
He burns with holy fire
With splendour he is crowned
How awesome is the sight
Our radiant king of light
Be still for the glory of the Lord
Is shining all around
Be still for the power of the Lord
Is moving in this place
He comes to cleanse and heal
To minister his grace
No work to hard for him
In faith receive from him
Be still for the power of the Lord
Is moving in this place

My Prayer: Dearest Lord, God Almigty please help us to be still so that we can absorb Your presence and Your strength. Help us to know that the more we seek You and have Your word in our heart, it can help us be quiet, restful, and attentive to You during our walking hours. In this I pray today, in Jesus' Christ name. Amen
